Monitor tropical weather
advisories on radio/ TV or National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) weather radio.
If a warning is issued or
a tornado is imminent, move to a shelter, such as a
basement (if available)
or to an interior room on the lowest floor, such as a
closet or bathroom.
Wrap yourself in overcoats or blankets to protect yourself
from flying
debris.
If outside, seek shelter in
a safe building. If no suitable shelter is
available, lie flat in
the nearest ditch or depression and use your hands to
cover your head.
If in a car or mobile home,
ABANDON THEM IMMEDIATELY Most deaths
occur in cars and mobile
homes. If you are in either of those locations,
leave them and go
to a substantial structure or designated tornado
shelter.
Have a three day supply of
nonperishable food and a
"disaster kit" with spare clothing, prescription drugs,
flashlights,
radio, batteries, credit cards, and extra cash.
Fill vehicles' gas tanks.
Shutter windows and tie down
or bring in objects, such as lawn furniture and
grills.
