Floods and Flash Floods

There are several different kinds of flooding, three of which can occur in Georgia -
river floods, coastal floods, and urban floods.

Did you Know?
Flash floods are the # 1 weather-related killer in the United States.

Only six inches of fast-moving water can knock a person  off his or her feet.

Only two feet of water can float a full-size automobile.

Nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are vehicle-related.

What To Do... Know the flood risks in your community.

If you live in an area that is subject to flooding, obtain flood insurance.

Monitor weather reports on radio/ TV or NOAA weather radio.

In the event of a long-term flood event, store drinking water in clean bathtubs and other containers.

Keep a supply of food that requires no refrigeration and little cooking.

Be aware of downed power lines or other utility disruptions.

Avoid flooded areas; do not drive on flooded roads; evacuate a vehicle that is stalled in a flooded area.
